Effective October 1: Change in background check fee

Effective October 1, 2026, the cost for the background check will go up by $3. The new fee total will be $67.

This fee increase is not coming from the Utah Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) reviewed their costs for fingerprint background checks and decided a fee increase was needed to cover the costs of running their program. This review was completed in accordance with 28 C.F.R § 20.31(e) (2), which requires the FBI to periodically review the fees it collects.

DHHS collects the fee as part of the background check fee and passes the full amount on to the FBI.  None of this fee stays with our department.

We know any fee increase can be difficult. We appreciate your understanding in this matter. If you have any questions, please contact us.
